On Sunday, December 7, 2008, election of Kumaon Sabha (Regd.) Chandigarh held in Arya Samaj Mandir, Sector 27 C, in which Bachan Singh Nagarkoti won the seat of President. He defeated his opposite Candidate Dr. Suman Shankar Tiwari with the huge margin of 754 votes. By winning the seat of President, 'Nagarkoti' group sweeps the Kumaon Sabha elections, as before this Rajinder Singh Rawat and Than Singh Bisht of Nagarkoti group unanimously won the seat of Gen. Secretary and Cashier as candidates of Mr.Tiwari withdraws their nominations.
In the election, Bachan Singh Nagarkoti got 1075 votes while Suman Shankar Tiwari could only manage 321 votes.
It would be pertinent to mention here that Bachan Singh Nagarkoti elected president for fourth time. Earlier three times he won the seat unanimously. The symbol of Nagarkoti group was 'Ugta Suraj' (Rising Sun).
Voters started lining up in the polling booth from the morning and continued till the 4 in the evening, when election commission closed the voting. Before announcing the results, supporters of Nagarkoti group started their winning celebration. Around 6 in the evening election commission announced the victory of Bachan Singh Nagarkoti. Supporters of Nagarkoti were dancing on the beats of 'DHOL'. On the other hand supporters of Suman Shankar Tiwari leave the spot after seeing their candidate is going to loose.
After winning the election Bachan Singh Nagarkoti said that his priority would be to get land allotted for the Kumaon Bhawan and bring together all Kumaonies living in the Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali and nearby areas.
