Bageshwar

Bageshwar, named “The Adobe Of Gods”, is a peaceful town with a large and exhaustive list of religious legends associated with it. Its festivities and romantic surroundings make it even more special. Bageshwar, 90 kms from Almora, is situated on the meeting-point of Gomti and Surya rivers.

The Rich History

The Shiva temple, the most famous landmark in Bageshwar, was constructed during the reign of the Chands. There is a legend associated with installation of a Shiva Linga here; it was Shri Manorath Pandey of Palayn village who succeeded in installing the idol after repeated failed attempts by all and sundry. He was able to do it by performing penances on the Shivratri. A grand fair is held on every Shivratri in memory of the event. It is a great crowd puller apart from it being important in terms of religious significance.

Fairs and Festivals

Shivratri Fair

A large number of devotees and tourists get together at the ancient Shiva Temple situated in the middle of the town to celebrate this fair. This fair is held in commemoration of the great feat of an ordinary mortal i.e. the installation of the Shiva Linga in the temple.
The famous Uttarayani mela is also celebrated here at a huge scale among many other prominent places in Kumaon. Celebration of Kartik Purnima and the Dusshera Mela hold special place in the festival calendar of the region.
